Ray Heid with Irene Barba, an explanation:
"I met Ray while skiing in Taos in 2016 and embarked on a writing odyssey. This book took five years to put together. With Ray in Colorado and me in California, we dealt logistically with distance in that several states separated us along with the commodity of time. Time was a factor in that we live full lives in the outdoors and spending chunks of time indoors was difficult. That was the case until the pandemic arrived. I stayed home in 2020 due to the 'stay safe, stay home' requests and spent the majority of my time working on Ray's book.
In truth, Ray made several attempts to put his stories in print. His dyslexia was such that the process of writing a book was too much. When we met, I tried to encourage him to start on his book again and found myself accepting his request for help. Five years later and with a great sense of accomplishment, we are published.
Of course, the best part of this book was getting to know Ray and his family. I feel that I have acquired a second home and family in North Routt Colorado. At times, learning the ins and outs of self-publishing was daunting. Now that we are published, I can step away, reflect on the experience and feel proud of our efforts. We contributed to the history of Steamboat Springs, Clark and the North Routt area of Colorado with the addition of Ray's life and collection of stories. Ray's life was categorized into five chapters of storytelling totaling 310 pages including over 200 images to enjoy."
The book is now available on Amazon.com
An excerpt from the Acknowledgements:
"Over the last several years, we have forged a friendship that has developed into a writing partnership. I am deeply grateful for all that she (Irene) has taken on to see this book completed. We started with recorded stories and she then armed me with an audio recorder when she went back to her home in Three Rivers, the gateway community to Sequoia National Park in the Sierra. At one point when my friends asked when the book would be finished, she ribbed me and said, "When Ray quits repeating himself." She has spent endless amounts of time transcribing the audios, writing and editing my stories. She digitized my photo collection making them book ready and formatted the book for printing."
